Bozeman's Best Hikes for Beginners

Looking for the best easy hikes in Bozeman that don’t require a full-day commitment or expert-level endurance?

Same.

Whether you’re new to hiking, hosting out-of-town friends, or just want a quick reset after work, these beginner-friendly hiking trails near Bozeman deliver big views without the burnout.

We’re talking:

  • short distances
  • low to moderate elevation
  • close to downtown Bozeman
  • a cute view
  • and a little fresh air moment

And because we like to keep things interesting…
there may be a free Intrigue Ink t-shirt hidden somewhere along these trails.

Just saying… the hints to finding it are hidden below 😉
(And if you’re reading this after the t-shirts are gone… we hope the hike was still worth it.)

1. Drinking Horse Mountain

Distance: ~2.2 miles round trip
Vibe: Quick, scenic, “I did something today” energy

This one is a Bozeman classic for a reason.

The switchbacks make it feel like you’re doing something impressive… without actually destroying yourself. You get a solid view at the top, a good little sweat, and you’re back in time for a coffee run.

Perfect for:

  • post-work hikes
  • visitors
  • proving you’re “outdoorsy” without overcommitting

Clue:

Where the switchbacks begin and the rules get repeated, follow the north trail until the mountain starts sounding a little bossy.

About 0.3 miles up the north trail. When you reach the barricade reminding you to “stay on path”… pause there for a second.

2. Peets Hill / Burke Park

Distance: however far you feel like going
Vibe: Soft launch into hiking

If you’re not really trying to hike… this is your spot.

Peets Hill is more of a scenic stroll than a hike, but the views of Bozeman and the surrounding mountains? Unreal.

This is where you go for:

  • sunset walks
  • coffee in hand
  • if you love dogs

Clue:

Where the city glows behind you and the trail bends left, follow the scent of lilacs and trust your instincts .

Somewhere in the bushes after the turn… there may be more than flowers hiding there.

3. Sourdough Canyon (Bozeman Creek Trail)

Distance: up to 10+ miles (but you can turn around anytime)
Vibe: Peaceful, forest-core, choose-your-own-adventure

This trail is perfect if you want options.

Go for 20 minutes. Go for 2 hours. Fully up to you.

It follows the creek, it’s mostly flat, and it feels like you’ve escaped into the woods without actually going that far.

Perfect for:

  • long chats
  • clearing your head
  • pretending you’re in a coming-of-age film

Clue:

Where the swim hole runs cold and the dogs get judged, take the path less muddy and look toward the trees instead 👀

(When you spot the “clean up after your dog” sign near the swimming hole… you’re in the right place.)

4. Story Mill Community Park Trail

Distance: ~2 miles (loop it your way)
Vibe: Easy, open, low-effort babeee

This is the definition of accessible.

Wide paths, minimal elevation, and plenty of space to just wander.

Also ideal if you’re:

  • walking with friends
  • not wearing “real hiking shoes”
  • bringing a little picnic moment

Clue:

Where the winding paths end and the river keeps moving, search the space between getting lost and going with the flow.

Somewhere between the labyrinth and the water… something’s waiting.

5. Glen Lake Rotary Park Trail

Distance: short and sweet
Vibe: chill, water views, no pressure

A little underrated gem.

You get water, open space, and a super approachable trail that feels more like a reset than a workout.

Perfect for:

  • slow mornings
  • decompressing
  • “I just need to touch grass” energy

Clue:

Where the trail stays quiet and the water does most of the talking, wander just far enough to find the giants resting by the river 👀

Tucked between the boulders about 0.2 miles from the start… something might be waiting.

Before You Go (aka don’t say we didn’t warn you)

  • Bring water. Yes, even for the “easy” ones.
  • Check trail conditions. Montana loves a surprise.
  • Be respectful. Pack it in, pack it out.
  • And at the very least we hope you find something along the way

The Free Tee Deal

We’ve hidden a free Intrigue Ink tee somewhere across these trails.

No map. No exact directions. Just vibes and clues.

If you find it:

  • take a pic
  • tag us @intrigue.ink
  • brag a little (you earned it)

TL;DR

Easy hikes. Good views. Main character energy.
And a little treasure hunt to make it interesting.

See you out there.
